Season 5 Episode 32: The Hunchback of Notre Dame

The Hunchback of Notre Dame, created by Victor Hugo in 1831, tells the tragic story of Quasimodo, the deformed bell-ringer of Paris’s Notre Dame Cathedral. Raised in isolation by the stern archdeacon Claude Frollo, Quasimodo’s life changes when he meets the kind and beautiful gypsy Esmeralda. Despite his appearance, he shows deep compassion and courage, defending her from cruelty and injustice. Set against the backdrop of medieval Paris, the tale explores themes of love, faith, and societal prejudice. Quasimodo’s devotion and heartbreak make him one of literature’s most enduring symbols of inner beauty and humanity.
